This page is to remember all the sweet children who received a bracelet but who passed away. I am thankful they allowed me into their lives. I will always remember them. ♥
June 22, Amy passed away at the age of 19. Just 3 days before her 20th birthday. Amy fought metastasized liver cancer but she always stayed positive. Her kind soul focused on other people instead of herself and she made the most of every day she had left, despite knowing that she would not survive. <3
Hazel passed away on March 30 at the age of 7. She received her bracelet shortly after she was diagnosed with neuroblastoma for the first time, in 2013. After surgery, chemo, radiation, a stem cell transplant and immunotherapy she was declared NED (no evidence of disease) in 2014. Unfortunately, 2,5 years later Hazel relapsed and another tough fight lay ahead. She stayed strong and endured it all, but the disease progressed to such an extent that she realized she would get her miracle of healing in a better place. Moments before she passed away, she asked her mum and dad if she was going to die. She was scared but her parents comforted her, and when she realized that she would be going home to Jesus she said goodbye, closed her eyes and went. Hazel was the cutest and she always wanted the best for other kids. She inspired thousands of people across the world and will keep doing this by the legacy she left behind. <3
TiedTogether-warrior Sabine passed away on the 8th of May, at the age of 15. Sabine was diagnosed with diffuse midline glioma, a type of brain cancer, in 2016. Doctors in the Netherlands were not able to help her anymore, and Sabine and her family went to Dr. Burzynski in Texas. A couple of months ago the tumor metastasized and Sabine was sent home. Her final wish was to receive a lot of cards, and the world massively answered this call; she received more than 50 000 cards. She courageously fought till the end. <3
The adorable, amazing dinosaur-loving hero and TiedTogether-warrior Kaiyanna, aka Kai, passed away December 19 at the age of 4. Kai bravely fought AT/RT brain cancer and she honestly was the sweetest kid you could ever imagine. I loved looking at her pictures from which her brave and sparkly personality spoke, and to read the beautiful words her amazing mum added to these. Kai will be missed and loved forever. Her legacy continues. <3
TiedTogether-warrior Cassandra passed away August 17 at the age of just 1. Cassandra was diagnosed with leukemia when she was just 2 months old, and she had to stay in the hospital for 8 long months after which she was put on palliative care for another 10 months. She was, is and will stay a ray of sunshine in the lives of her parents & her >360000 supporters. <3 "Le 17 août dernier, à la lueur des derniers rayons de Soleil, Cassandra a pris son envol vers un monde où les enfants ne souffrent pas." □
TiedTogether-warrior Floor passed away on August 10 at the age of 6. More than a year ago, in July 2015, I visited the then 5-year-old Floor in the Prinses Máxima Centre for Pediatric Oncology in Utrecht. Somewhat shy she sat on her mother's lap while I was tying her bracelet around her wrist. Of course, the bracelet had to be pink, because like most of the girls her age, Floor loved the colour pink. But unlike most of the girls her age, Floor had already been fighting neuroblastoma, a pediatric central nervous system tumour, for half a year. Last December, a few months after my visit, Floor and her family left to Philadelphia, USA, for the follow-up treatment immunotherapy to increase Floor's chances of survival. Two months ago they got the terrible news that the neuroblastoma was back, right through all treatments. She had tumours in and around her liver, in her head, and there were neuroblastoma cells in her bone marrow as well. This meant that there was no treatment option left for Floor, and the same day she and her family returned to the Netherlands. After a few more weeks at home in which valuable memories were made, Floor passed away in the morning of the tenth of August at the age of 6. Together with many other children, she will always stay the reason why I am going to do what I have been dreaming of: to start with Medicine in September to become a pediatric oncologist.
TiedTogether-warrior Natasha passed away August 4 at the age of 12. Natasha fought the monster DIPG for 15 months. DIPG (diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma) is an aggressive type of cancer in the brain stem, the part of the brain that controls all vital functions like breathing, swallowing and consciousness. DIPG is inoperable and incurable, and even though treatment focuses on shrinking the tumor and keeping it 'asleep' as long as possible, children will eventually start losing their physical functions up to the point where they can no longer communicate or control their body. Most of the children with DIPG pass away within a year after diagnosis. Natasha was such a selfless, brave and postive girl, she wanted her bracelet to say "Stay Happy, Live Long", and she had a strong faith until the end. "You can learn the biggest things from the littlest things. In some ways you can call it having something from nothing. We can’t be hung on the things we are angry, embarrassed or sad about because the best things in life overthrow that that. The amount of times you smile about things outnumbers the bad things by millions." "I don't want to be wise beyond my years. I just want to be a kid without cancer."
TiedTogether-warrior Gerrianne passed away at the age of 17. She was diagnosed with synovial sarcoma (a type of soft tissue cancer) in 2014. After chemo, proton therapy, and a surgery she was declared cancer-free. Just a few months later the cancer was back. In January of this year the doctors told her that there was nothing more they could do for her. Gerrianne has been and will always stay a huge inspiration to many. She wrote openly about the decision she'd had to make, about her funeral, about her family and friends, about her faith in God. She was just amazing... <3 "I was 16 years old and I knew I would turn 17. But now I'm 17 and now... now I know that I will not turn 18." "I will never give up, I will not stop fighting. Although I will not stay here on earth, I will still have won this fight" She participated in the next season of the Dutch tv program Over Mijn Lijk (which will be broadcasted in 2018). 'But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.' (Isaiah 40:31 - her favourite Bible verse)
TiedTogether-warrior Kay passed away May 24 at the age of 8 after a long battle with neuroblastoma. He was such an amazing boy, whose courage and smiles I'll never forget.
TiedTogether-warrior Rumer passed away at the age of 3, after fighting neuroblastoma for seventeen months.
TiedTogether-warrior Justin passed away at the age of 4. Justin was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma when he was 2 years old, and relapsed last year. Soon the cancer started spreading throughout his entire little body. He passed away after a long and tough fight.
TiedTogether-warrior Delaney passed away at the age of 13. Delaney was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma at the age of 7. After fighting cancer FIVE times, Delaney was sent home on hospice a few months ago. She was amazing, and she was (and will stay!) an inspiring childhood cancer advocate.
TiedTogether-warrior Lena passed away at the age of 16. Lena bravely fought both neuroblastoma and leukemia. She was first diagnosed with neuroblastoma when she was 2 years old, and relapsed at the age of 11. Shortly after she was also diagnosed with leukemia. No treatment seemed to be working and Lena had multiple metastases all over her body. Her organs were slowly giving up. A week before her passing she posted on her Instagram: "My body is full with cancer. But I stopped to think about "why me" because I'm trying to think positive! Yah I know that I can't beat it and that I'm flying away as an angel some day! But I want to let all my friends know that I'll be your angel in the sky from where I'll watch down to you everyday! And don't forget that I'll always be in your heart! heart-emoticon " A few days after that post she passed away. I'll forever cherish this beautiful picture of her with her bracelet and the quote I sent her. She always lived by her motto: "Never stop fighting, and enjoy every second of your life" <3
TiedTogether-warrior Lýnn passed away at the age of 1. She fought acute lymphoblastic leukemia and relapsed in December. A few weeks ago, the doctors told her parents that there was nothing more they could do for her.
TiedTogether-warrior Emma passed away at the age of 3. Emma fought the incurable type of brain cancer DIPG. She wasn't tolerating the life-prolonging treatments well, and lost her hearing due to the cruel tumor. The bracelets for her and her sister Lily were just sent out yesterday, too. Lily and Emma were best friends.
They are together again... TiedTogether-warior Marijn passed away at the age of 6. Marijn relapsed twice from a Wilms' tumor. His best friend Ferre passed away in September, their bracelets have the same design... A lion. Now they are together again.
TiedTogether-warrior Marcus passed away at the age of 4. His parents fled from a former Soviet Union to the Netherlands before Marcus was born. They live in an asylum seekers centre. Marcus was diagnosed with neuroblastoma stage IV in June 2015. He just finished his 7th cycle of chemo and started with a stem cell reinfusion when his health suddenly deteriorated. He has spent the past two weeks at the IC and his health was getting worse and worse. He had a collapsed lung tonight and passed away this afternoon, just two days after I sent him his bracelet.
TiedTogether-warrior Sijmen passed away at the age of 3. Sijmen had been fighting neuroblastoma since August 2014, and after months of intense treatment he had to go to Philadelphia, USA, for immunotherapy. In August of this year they received the news that the neuroblastoma was back. Sijmen would not survive this. A few days after this news, they went back to the Netherlands. "Maandagmiddag 14 december om 12:35 uur is onze grote kanjer Sijmen overleden. Hij heeft tot het laatst gestreden als een leeuw. Wij zijn onbeschrijflijk trots op hoe hij dat gedaan heeft. Nu krijgt hij de rust die wij hem zo ontzettend gunnen." "Our hero Sijmen passed away Monday afternoon December 14, at 00:35 PM. He has fought as a lion till the end. We're proud of him beyond words how he fought. He will now get the rest we grant him so much."
TiedTogether-warrior Lotte passed away at the age of 12. Lotte was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia in November 2014. Last May she was declared "in remission", but just 3 weeks later she relapsed. Just 9 days ago they got the news that the leukemia was very aggressive, Lotte would have to give up the fight... My heart goes out to her friends and family, her twin sister Emma in particular. It must be so hard to lose your twin sister. Her family just posted on their facebook that Lotte passed away, and they included the bottom right picture, where Lotte is wearing her bracelet... "Fighting, Hoping, Living"
TiedTogether-warrior Skye passed away at the age of 2. "At 8.46pm last night our Skye Pie passed away peacefully surrounded by most of her loved ones." Skye bravely fought both AML and ALL leukemia. Her 4-year-old brother donated bone marrow to Skye for a transplant, but within months few donor cells remained and her illness was deemed terminal.
TiedTogether-warrior Yelina passed away at the age of 2. Yelina courageously fought neuroblastoma. Heartbroken, no words...
Beautiful TiedTogether-warrior Ynah passed away at the age of 11. Ynah courageously fought acute myeloid leukemia + relapse. Ynah was the first child from the Philippines to receive a bracelet, 3 weeks ago. Such a hero, always staying strong. Her health suddenly deteriorated very quickly over the past few days and when I woke up and I saw a message from her mother saying: "We are losing"... I quickly took a look at her Facebook page and was so saddened to read that Ynah had passed away. Ynah still wears my bracelet. <3
TiedTogether-warrior Ferre passed away at the age of 6. Ferre courageously fought neuroblastoma. He relapsed and there was nothing more they could do for him. As the tumors were growing and growing, Ferre started to feel worse. But what always stayed were his happiness, positivity, courage, humor and cuteness. I absolutely love Ferre. He was the cutest boy on this entire planet. His passing leaves a gap in my heart. A gap that I can only fill by continuing spreading love to warriors like him. By fighting for them. By dedicating my life to them. By becoming a pediatric oncologist. By caring for them. By doing research for them. By contributing to the childhood cancer community in every way possible. Thank you Ferre for teaching me about life. Your legacy will be continued. Whenever I feel sad, your happiness will teach me to be happy. Whenever I'm complaining, your positivity will inspire me. Whenever I am insecure, weak and frightened, your courage will give me courage. Thank you Ferre.
TiedTogether-warrior Austin passed away Tuesday at the age of 18. Austin fought progressive muscular dystrophy. He was such a happy boy. His one big wish was an accessible house, unfortunately they were not able to make his big wish come true. Here is the video of Austin receiving his bracelet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bXtzsaz7re4 He loved minions, so last month I sent him a few. He received them just two weeks ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SQ6bxg2ymUA (He says: "Thank you for sending me Minions from the Netherlands, Maaike! I love them! I love you!" Love, Austin)
TiedTogether-warrior Simone from Colorado, USA passed away unexpectedly at the age of 2. Simone received her bracelet a while ago but I did not yet have a chance to post the picture of her with her bracelet, and now I have to post her "in loving memory"-picture... She fought MLL-rearranged acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She was diagnosed when she was not even 1 year old and she has spent most of this last year inpatient. Two weeks ago her family got the news that Simone relapsed. Yesterday evening she started breathing labored out of nowhere and she was rushed to the PICU and just 20 minutes later she was gone. Her daddy just made it there in time to hold her hand... Simone loved playing with her big sister's jewelry and this bracelet was her first own bracelet... She was thrilled to get the bracelet and it cheered up one of her many many days in the hospital. Simone you did not survive this fight but I will keep fighting this cruel disease for heroes like you, all my life.
TiedTogether-warrior Mary Elizabeth passed away at the age of 12. M.E. was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in the spring of 2014. Her cancer was too aggressive to just do chemo so she had to get a bone marrow transplant. Her brother turned out to be a perfect match. A few weeks after the transplant she developed severe graft-versus-host disease, otherwise known as transplant disease. Two weeks later they learned that she had relapsed. She had to move to a different hospital, separated from her family. She started chemo which caused severe chemo burns over 90% of her body. She was back in remission, but was diagnosed with a chloroma (leukemia tumor) on her spine. She was very close to being permanently paralyzed. She received another BMT, with her father as donor. After this transplant she developed a severe fungal infection, and she had to stay in the ICU for 12 days because of a pulmonary bleed. She was intubated and put into a medically induced coma for 6 days. She relapsed again and had several lung bleeds. Another BMT was necessary, her mother was the donor this time. New chloromas were found in her brain and behind her eye. She got radiation but took a turn for the worse and passed away Wednesday morning. M.E. always stood strong and never gave up hope. She always ecouraged other children with cancer to keep fighting.

TiedTogether-Warrior Sanne passed away at the age of 14. I came in touch with Sanne in January of this year. After a few weeks she suddenly sent me a DM on Instagram. She told me that she needed somebody to share something with, and while she didn’t know me really well back then, she chose me. Which I am so thankful for. She told me that she had had leukemia 2 times and that she wasn’t doing well at the moment. The leukemia would probably be back. If it was back, she would most probably die, and she did not want to die, she was scared for death and for what would be after death, because she didn’t know what it would be like. She wanted a future. I told her that she could WhatsApp me whenever she wanted to and she did. The next day I got a message from her, the leukemia was back, and it was bad. So bad, that she would die in a few weeks if they didn’t do something about it. She decided to undergo another bone marrow transplant which gave her a 15%-20% chance of survival. Unfortunately I lost our conversation, fortunately I had screenshotted a part. When in April a child I had met had passed away, she sent me a message saying “I am glad for you that you did not meet me otherwise you would miss me more…”. I told her that I would LOVE to meet her, it is better to have met and lost than to never have met. However she couldn’t get visitors during her transplant, the most dangerous part of the treatment. She asked me what I thought about what is going to happen after death. I am Christian so I told her about my opinion. She was very interested and wanted to know all about it. She wanted that it was that easy for her, that she just believed in something as well, so she would know where she would go to after death. She was scared. She was scared that there would not be anything. And the hardest part for her was leaving people behind. I told her just to pray and she did. She was such a lovely girl, she always commented on the pictures of other children I posted with upcheering words. We had planned on meeting each other multiple times but every time there was something that came between it, and now she is gone… My friend whom I had conversations with till past midnight, is gone…
